Flying on the wings of 'Eagle'


How the new Altair system would land astronauts back on the Moon

"We wanted it to be a bit more Star Wars or Star Trek but the physics gets in the way," says John Connolly, chief architect of Nasa's new Altair Moon Lander.

The spacecraft, part of the US space agency's Constellation programme, is the vehicle that Nasa hopes will carry man to the surface of the Moon by 2020.

Despite Mr Connolly's fantasies about its design, prototypes of the craft bear a striking resemblance to the Eagle lander which carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface 40 years ago.

"That was an ugly, spidery spacecraft," he says. "But the Apollo engineers got a lot of things right."

Like the Eagle, Altair will be delivered into orbit by a heavy-lift rocket (the Ares V, currently under development) and then ferried on towards the Moon by a command module.

And like its predecessor it is a two-stage vehicle: a descent and an ascent stage.

The large descent module - including the fragile looking legs - consists largely of an engine and propellant tanks.

The smaller ascent module - on top of the vehicle - contains the life support systems and the engine required to get the astronauts back to an orbiting module; another throwback to the Apollo days.

But if it looks like Eagle, that is no surprise. The Altair team have been poring over the old design blueprints and have even drafted in some of the old Apollo engineers.

"We ask them a lot of questions," said Mr Connolly.

Even the lander's name has echoes of the Eagle. Altair is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, Latin for Eagle.

But there are also key differences.

For starters, the new craft is much larger and is a multi-role vehicle, able to deliver astronauts or cargo to the Moon's surface.

In a standard mission, it will be able to deliver four astronauts to the lunar surface, compared with the Eagle's two.

The module acts as living quarters for the crew and features an airlock, meaning that the whole cabin does not need to be depressurised every time an astronaut exits the vehicle.

It also has an additional advantage.

"We talked to the Apollo astronauts and they had a real problem with dust in the cabin," said Mr Connolly.

"The airlock allows us control the dust - dusty space suits can be kept out of the cabin - and it also allows us to split the crew's operations."

In the new lander, for example, two astronauts could remain inside whilst two others explore outside.

The airlock - because of its weight - is left behind on the Moon's surface with the descent stage when the astronauts are ready to leave.

Other configurations of the new lander allow it to act as a lunar outpost, sustaining a crew for more than six months, or as a cargo truck, shipping more than 14 tonnes of material to the surface. These option are critical for Nasa's plans to set up a base on the moon as a staging post for exploration on Mars.

All the vehicles use a common descent stage, with different configurations of craft on top depending on the mission.

However, one of the main differences to Eagle is the craft's ability to land almost anywhere on the lunar surface.

"Apollo was restricted to mid latitudes and broad daylight," explained Justin Vican, part of a team at the Draper Laboratory in Boston, US, which is developing a new landing system for Altair.

"They could only land under optimal conditions."

The Autonomous precision Landing Hazard Avoidance Technology (Alhat) project at Draper Labs - the place where the first Apollo Guidance Computers were designed - aims to overcome these limitations.

"One of the hardest spots to land is somewhere like the South Pole," said Mr Vican. "Odds are you are going to be landing in total darkness."

Alhat will basically allow the astronauts to see in the dark.

It will use a suite of sensors and technologies such as a flash Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging)

"It's like a sonar but with light," explained Mr Vican.

The system gives the astronauts very high resolution topographical images of the surface.

"From space you can see the big obstacles. The real danger is if you land on a rock three feet high."

The team behind Alhat aim to have a system that can detect objects "about the size of a basketball" along with steep or cratered terrain.

When the system picks up a hazard, it warns the pilot and allows them to choose a new and precise landing spot on the fly.

It is an example of how technology is reducing the risk of space flight.

"The design margins for Eagle were very thin," said Mr Connolly. "Altair should be safer."

The spacecraft is currently on its third design, but Mr Connolly says there will be likely be a "dozen more" before it is set in stone and the blueprints turned over to an industrial partner to construct.

However, there is still a question whether it will get that far.

Currently, the Obama administration is undertaking a review of Nasa's manned space activities. The Augustine review, as it is known, is due to report back in August.

"Nasa is playing its part [in the review]," he says. "We feel good. If there is an option of going to the Moon, we will need a lander."

And if it does get the go-ahead, does he think a new era of manned lunar exploration will capture people's imaginations in the same way as Apollo?

"I think it will do in a different way," he says. "With communications technology, it will be a very personal experience. But still very exciting."

Wikipedia painting row escalates

The battle over Wikipedia's use of images from a British art gallery's website has intensified.

The online encyclopaedia has accused the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) of betraying its public service mission.

But the gallery has said it needs to recoup the £1m cost of its digitisation programme and claims Wikipedia has misrepresented its position.

The NPG is threatening legal action after 3,300 images from its website were uploaded to Wikipedia.

The high-resolution images were uploaded by Wikipedia volunteer Derrick Coetzee.

Now Erik Moeller, the deputy director of the Wikimedia Foundation which runs the online encyclopaedia, has laid out the organisation's stance in a blog post.

'Empire building'

He said most observers would think the two sides should be "allies not adversaries" and that museums and other cultural institutions should not pursue extra revenue at the expense of limiting public access to their material.

"It is hard to see a plausible argument that excluding public domain content from a free, non-profit encyclopaedia serves any public interest whatsoever," he wrote.

He points out that two German photographic archives donated 350,000 copyrighted images for use on Wikipedia, and other institutions in the United States and the UK have seen benefits in making material available for use.

Another Wikipedia volunteer David Gerard has blogged about the row, claiming that the National Portrait Gallery makes only £10-15,000 a year from web licensing, less than it makes "selling food in the cafe".

But the gallery insists that its case has been misrepresented, and has now released a statement denying many of the charges made by Wikipedia.

It denies claims that it has been "locking up and limiting access to educational materials", saying that it has been a pioneer in making its material available.

It has worked for the last five years toward the target of getting half of its collection online by 2009. "We will be able to achieve this," said the gallery's statement, "as a result of self-generated income."

The gallery says that while it only makes a limited revenue from web licensing, it earns far more from the reproduction of its images in books and magazines - £339,000 in the last year.

But it says the present situation jeopardises its ability to fund its digitisation process from its own resources.

The gallery has claimed that Derrick Coetzee's actions have breached English copyright laws, which protect copies of original works even when they themselves are out of copyright.

The National Portrait Gallery now says it only sent a legal letter to Derrick Coetzee after the Wikimedia Foundation failed to respond to requests to discuss the issue. But it says contact has now been made and remains hopeful that a dialogue will be possible.

A spokeswoman also said that the two German archives mentioned in Erik Moeller's blog had in fact supplied medium resolution images to Wikipedia, and insisted that the National Portrait Gallery had been willing to offer similar material to Wikipedia.

The gallery also explained how Derrick Coetzee was able to obtain the high resolution files from its site. They were made available to visitors using a "Zoomify" feature, which works by allowing several high resolution files to be seen all together.

It claims Mr Coetzee used special software to "de-scramble" the high-resolution tiles, allowing the whole portrait to be seen in high resolution.

The British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies has backed the National Portrait Gallery's stance.

"If owners of out of copyright material are not going to have the derivative works they have created protected, which will result in anyone being able to use then for free, they will cease to invest in the digitisation of works, and everyone will be the poorer," it wrote in an email to its members.

But the Wikipedia volunteer David Gerard accuses the gallery of bureaucratic empire building.

Gadget heaven for Japanese geeks

With broadband connections ten times faster than the US and 90% of the population owning mobile phones, it is not surprising that Japan has its own "Electronic Town".

Called Akihabara, it is the centre of "otaku" or "geek" culture in Tokyo.

In the district it is possible to buy anything from spy cameras to underground computer games.

"Tokyo is the hot bed for new electronics in the whole world," said Serkan Toto, Japanese correspondent for the Tech Crunch news blog.

"Japan is a very advanced technology-wise, it's a nation of early adopters."

Technology consultant, Steve Nagata who is also known as the "King of Akihabara" took Digital Planet presenter Gareth Mitchell for a stroll through the streets of the district.

First stop as Radio Street - a must for the hackers and makers among Japan's cadre of geeks who are seeking components to start or finish an DIY electrical project.

"You can buy anything you need, if you want a wire connector or a plug, you can find it here. Ready made or all the parts that you need to build it yourself," said Mr Nagata.

"You can come here and build to your heart's content," he added.

For Mr Nagata Japan's long-standing obsession with technology springs from a wish to understand what is behind lots of gadgets.

"It comes from a deep interest in things around them and wanting to find put how things work and know what each component does," said Mr Nagata.

Under surveillance

Akihabara hosts more than just component shops. Finished goods are on sale too. Those willing to rummage can find anything from old radio tubes to audio recorders, high end surveillance equipment and the low end too such as a tie with a built-in camera.

"This is a very big part of Akihabara, the surveillance equipment with every kind of camera from professional grade to little teeny cameras that you can stick into all sorts of different things," said Mr Nagata.

"The equipment itself is legal but how you use it may definitely run afoul of certain restrictions.

"You really never do know when someone is watching you," he added.

As might be expected Akihabara reflects the thriving underground, homemade software culture in Japan.

"This is a garage software industry for anyone from individuals to small clubs or a company that produce and sell unlicensed software," said Mr Nagata.

"There are exact lookalikes to completely original software, this stuff is just as impressive as major console software."

The products cost less then the titles from the major gaming brands but, said Mr Nagata, making money is not the main aim for the folk behind the software.

"This is very much a labour of love, something that they do out of their affection towards a particular character or style of gaming," said Mr Nagata.

"It's their attempt to fill the world with something that they want to exist in it.

"This underground amateur culture has always been a big part of Akihabara and 'otaku' culture, back from home made comic books, now moving into homemade hardware and software."

Google has announced which hardware firms have pledged to build machines that will run its Chrome OS.

The search giant said it was working with many firms on Chrome OS hardware including Acer, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Toshiba.

The software is designed to work with the web and Google said it was most likely to appear on smaller portable computers known as netbooks.

The browser-based operating system will be released to the public in 2010.

In a blog post announcing the hardware partners, Google said that the code for the Chrome OS would be open sourced in late 2009. Google said that the software will be free to download and use.

The first netbooks that can run the software will be ready in late 2010. Since Asus launched the first netbook the cut-down computers have proved hugely popular.

Analyst firm Gartner predicts that 80% more netbooks will be sold in 2009 than sold in 2008. However, so far, the small computers only make up 8% of the total PC market.

The Chrome OS will be designed to work with Intel chips that appear in the vast majority of desktop PCs, laptops and netbooks as well as the Arm chips that power most of the world's mobile phones. Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, who both build devices based around Arm chips, were also unveiled as partners on the Chrome OS project.

In a blog post announcing some of the hardware partners, Google also said it was working with Adobe on the operating system. This could turn out to be significant because of the wide use of Adobe's Flash software.

Flash is used to power many multimedia websites but Adobe has been working hard to extend its capabilities via the Air technology and make it more web-centric too. Microsoft is developing its Silverlight technology to do a similar job
